Pharmaceuticals & Medical Products
Coordinating the transportation of pharmaceuticals and medical products requires strict adherence to temperature controls, handling instructions, and chain-of-custody protocols. Onsite Global Logistics (OGL) supports healthcare supply chains by arranging domestic transport and international freight forwarding through qualified providers, focusing on shipment data tracking and documentation handoffs.
Coordinating Pharmaceutical Supply Chains
The pharmaceutical supply chain involves multiple stages, from the movement of raw materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients to the distribution of finished medical products. OGL coordinates these movements by reviewing shipment data, transmitting approved temperature and handling instructions to carriers, and recording chain-of-custody handoffs. By working with qualified transportation providers, we support the physical flow of goods while maintaining visibility across the supply chain.
Our role focuses on the logistics coordination aspect of the supply chain. We request and compare carrier options, identify appropriate routing based on the shipment’s requirements, and transmit necessary documentation. We do not validate product quality, regulatory compliance, or patient suitability, but rather focus on executing the transportation plan according to the shipper’s specifications. This approach allows pharmaceutical companies to concentrate on their core competencies while we handle the logistical details of moving their products from origin to destination.
In addition to standard transportation, we coordinate project logistics for the pharmaceutical industry, such as the movement of manufacturing equipment or facility relocation. We review the dimensions and weight of the equipment, request appropriate specialized transport, and coordinate the scheduling of loading and unloading activities.
Temperature-Controlled Transportation
Many pharmaceutical and medical products require specific temperature ranges during transit to maintain their integrity. OGL coordinates temperature-controlled transportation by transmitting the shipper’s exact temperature requirements to qualified carriers. We request equipment that meets these specifications, such as refrigerated trailers or specialized air freight containers, and record the temperature monitoring data provided by the carriers during transit.
When exceptions occur, such as temperature deviations or transit delays, we identify the issue through carrier updates and transmit this information to the shipper. This allows the shipper to make informed decisions regarding the disposition of the product. We support the process by coordinating alternative transportation or storage options as directed by the shipper, utilizing our network of healthcare logistics providers.
We also review the specific requirements for different types of temperature-controlled shipments, such as frozen, refrigerated, or controlled room temperature. By transmitting these details clearly to the carriers, we support the adherence to the required conditions throughout the journey.
International Freight Forwarding and Customs
Moving medical products across international borders involves complex documentation and regulatory requirements. As an FMC-licensed Ocean Freight Forwarder (license 023947F), OGL coordinates global shipping for pharmaceutical supply chains. We review commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin, transmitting these documents to the appropriate parties to support the international movement of goods.
While OGL is not a customs broker, we coordinate with appropriately licensed alliance providers when requested to support the customs clearance process. We transmit the necessary shipment data to these brokers and record the clearance status. We do not make customs, regulatory, or dangerous-goods determinations, but we support the flow of information between the shipper, the carrier, and the customs broker to facilitate the international transit.
For international shipments, we also coordinate the booking of ocean or air freight space based on the shipper’s timeline and budget. We compare different routing options and transit schedules, presenting these to the shipper for their selection.
Packaging and Handling Protocols
Proper packaging and handling are critical components of pharmaceutical logistics. OGL reviews the shipper’s packaging specifications and handling instructions, transmitting these details to the selected carriers and warehouses. We request that providers follow these protocols, which may include instructions for upright orientation, shock avoidance, or specific loading configurations.
We record the condition of the cargo at key handoff points based on carrier reports and facility receipts. If damage or packaging integrity issues are identified, we transmit this information to the shipper along with supporting documentation, such as photographs or exception reports. This documentation supports the shipper’s quality assurance processes and any necessary claims procedures.
Chain-of-Custody and Documentation
Maintaining a clear record of possession is a standard requirement in pharmaceutical logistics. OGL supports chain-of-custody requirements by recording the transfer of goods between different parties in the supply chain. We collect and review bills of lading, delivery receipts, and other transit documents to build a record of the shipment’s journey from origin to destination.
This documentation is essential for tracking the movement of medical products and supporting the shipper’s internal record-keeping. We transmit these documents to the shipper upon completion of the delivery, providing a consolidated view of the transportation process.
